At BC Chicago Carpenters, we pride ourselves on crafting spaces that resonate with history, culture, and community. The Sankofa Story Garden was a project that allowed us to combine our deep love for carpentry with our passion for storytelling, heritage, and artistic expression.
From the very beginning, we worked closely with local artists, designers, and community leaders to shape a vision that honored both the cultural richness of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods.
Through this project, we were able to create something that not only stands as a work of art in its own right but also serves as a place where future stories will continue to unfold.
"We are proud to have played a part in bringing this project to life, and we believe that the Sankofa Story Garden will stand as a lasting legacy of culture, community, and craftsmanship for years to come. It is a space that honors the past, celebrates the present, and builds hope for the future—just as Sankofa teaches us."
The concept of the Sankofa Story Garden was born out of the African principle of “Sankofa,” which encourages us to look back and reclaim valuable lessons from the past as we move forward. This idea formed the heart of the garden, symbolizing a space where stories of resilience, cultural pride, and community come together to inspire future generations.
Bringing the Sankofa Story Garden to life required meticulous craftsmanship and a deep understanding of the importance of space. Every piece we built was infused with meaning. We used a combination of natural, sustainable materials to reflect the beauty of the environment and to symbolize growth and renewal. The garden's pathways, seating areas, and gathering spaces were thoughtfully designed to foster reflection, conversation, and connection.
The Sankofa Story Garden is more than just a beautiful public space; it’s a gathering place for people to share their experiences, learn from one another, and celebrate their shared heritage. At BC Chicago Carpenters, we believe that the spaces we build should reflect the communities they serve, and the Sankofa Story Garden is a testament to that belief.
